CMA Issues Statements on Preventive Services and Defense Authorization Bill

September 21, 2010

The Catholic Medical Association has issued a press release reporting public comments made to the Department of Health and Human Services and to U.S. senators, calling upon them to respect human life and conscience rights on two important issues that have arisen recently.

The CMA called upon Secretary Sebelius and HHS not to define contraceptives or sterilizing devices or procedures, as “preventive services” for purposes of rulemaking under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, particularly in light of the recent FDA decision on the abortion drug "ella." CMA also called upon U.S. senators to to remove an amendment authorizing the performance of elective abortion at U.S. military hospitals from the Defense Authorization Act for 2011.
