CMA Letter on the Protect Life Act Cited in House Committee Statement

February 18, 2011

On February 14, CMA President Jan R. Hemstad, M.D. sent a letter to Fred Upton (R.-Mich.), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, on the importance of H.R. 358, the Protect Life Act, and urging him and the Committee to reject any attempts to weaken federal protection for conscience rights. Dr. Hemstad's letter was written to respond to complaints of some interest groups that conscience protections need not be applied to all federal laws governing health care delivery.

Chairman Upton specifically cited the letter of the CMA in his opening comments. Later that same day, the legislation was successfully passed out of Committee. Chairman Upton's statement can be found here. The text of Dr. Hemstad's letter can be accessed by clicking here.
