CMA Member Publishes Article on Effects of Abortion
September 01, 2011
CMA member Mary L. Davenport, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., has published an article on the connection between abortion and subsequent increases in suicide attempts and mental health issues in The American Thinker. Davenport draws attention to the recent study published in the prestigious British Journal of Psychiatry, which demonstrates that nearly 10% of mental health problems in women are directly attributable to abortion. The article, "Abortion and mental health: quantitative synthesis and analysis of research published 1995-2009," by Priscilla Coleman of Bowling Green University, is a meta-analysis combining 22 studies of 877,181 women, 163, 831 of whom have had abortions. It shows that women with an abortion history have an 81% increased risk of mental health problems and 155% increased risk of suicide.
Davenport is also president, American Association of ProLife Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and medical director, Magnificat Maternal Health Program.
