The Church is certainly blessed with excellent shepherds among the U.S. bishops. The guidance contained in recent comments of two of these is worth considering, both for individual spiritual growth and for perspective in working for causes.

I have had the privilege of working with Bishop Vasa over the last five years. One of the most striking aspects of his character is the peace and joy he brings to a variety of tasks. Archbishop Chaput is one of the most inspiring and insightful commentators among the bishops of the Church. His comments about the pro-life movement, and do’s and don’ts for those engaged in the struggle to win respect for life in our culture, are well worth reading. But they can be applied to working with other groups and for other causes.
The comments of both of these bishops are worth reading and pondering, in the upcoming season of Lent or at any time.
