N.C. Register Health Care Reform Article Features CMA Members

An article in the National Catholic Register (posted on Sept. 18 and slated for publication in the Sept. 27-Oct. 3, 2009 issue) prominently featured members of the Catholic Medical Association. In the article, entitled "Catholic Physicians Wary of Health Care Reform," Register correspondent Joan Frawley Desmond, drew attention to a critique of current health care reform legislation that has received insufficient media attention to date.

While many religious organizations and media sources have focused on abortion and conscience rights as key issues for Catholics, this NCR article drew attention to foundational concerns raised by the Catholic Medical Association and many bishops to current versions of health care reform legislation. CMA physician members highlighted how the extreme government control implicit in current legislation would harm the physician-patient relationship. And an increasing number of bishops have been criticizing health care reform legislation for its violation of the principle of subsidiarity.

Desmond's article featured CMA members R. Steven White, M.D., George Isajiw, M.D., and Kathy Raviele, M.D., and can be read by clicking the link above.
