Phoenix Case Continues to Roil

January 06, 2011

Right before Christmas, on December 21, 2010, Phoenix Bishop Thomas Olmsted decreed that St. Joseph's could no longer be considered a Catholic hospital. The tensions in the case were further exacerbated by a public statement from the Catholic Health Association (CHA) affirming the actions of St. Joseph's and its parent system, Catholic Health West.

For recent coverage of the controversy, check out these articles by the Catholic News Agency. The first provides input from physician members of the diocesan medical ethics committee. The second examines the implications of the defiance of espiscopal authority by St. Joseph's and by CHA, and features extensive quotes from CMA Executive Director John F. Brehany.

The Catholic Medical Association's original statement responding to Bishop Olmsted's decree can be read here.
