Press Release on Burris Amendment and Elective Abortions in Military

Bala Cynwyd, PA – December 9, 2010 – The Catholic Medical Association (CMA) calls upon the U.S. Senate to reject all attempts to promote abortions in the U.S. military. Executive Director John F. Brehany, Ph.D. issued the following statement:
“The Burris Amendment (introduced by former Senator Roland Burris (D-IL), since replaced by Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL)) would overturn Department of Defense policy since 1996 prohibiting military personnel or facilities from performing elective abortions. It represents a cynical ploy by abortion advocates to use an important military funding bill (the National Defense Authorization Act for 2011 [S. 3454]) to promote abortions on military bases in the United States and around the world. Abortion not only takes innocent human lives, it has demonstrably negative effects on women’s health. This change in law would provide a massive new source of public subsidies for elective abortion and would create a whole new set of threats to the medical judgment, religious freedom, and conscience rights of military health-care providers.”
“CMA members should take immediate action to contact their senators and make their opinions known. Since it will be virtually impossible to amend the Burris Amendment or strike it from the military funding bill, the best strategy for rejecting this unprecedented expansion of abortion is to urge senators to oppose a cloture vote on the National Defense Authorization Act.”
