The Lie that Abortion is Safer than Pregnancy
February 27, 2011
This recent story out of the United Kingdom was one that made my jaw drop in shock, but not in surprise. Given the extent that the culture of death is overtaking our medical profession, is it any wonder that the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists saw fit to instruct health professionals: “Women should be advised that abortion is generally safer than continuing a pregnancy to term.”?
Before continuing my discussion of this, please take a moment to consider the words of a friend of mine, Tom Crowe:
What, exactly, is a “pregnancy”?
Is it a medical condition to be treated? A bacterial infection perhaps? Is it a parasite like a tapeworm?
It must be a severe condition that threatens women if the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists saw fit to instruct health professionals: “Women should be advised that abortion is generally safer than continuing a pregnancy to term.”
Yet women persist in allowing “pregnancies” to continue to term, quite clearly contra their own best health interests.
So what is so special about a “pregnancy” that women would endure putting on extra weight, risk varicose veins, allow their body to be stretched and thrown out of all chemical balance, and even risk permanent nerve damage, permanent weight gain, even death?
Is it merely a “choice”? Are so many women so masochistic that they would, without blinking, choose to ravage their own bodies for no good reason?
What is a “pregnancy,” if doctors can and do instruct, without blinking an eye, that “termination is safer than continuing the pregnancy to term.” Like a “pregnancy,” it is “generally” safer to terminate syphilis than to let it get to its full blown “term,” and syphilis, like a “pregnancy,” really only happens as a result of sexual contact.
But we don’t have women conflicted over whether to continue syphilis to term, such that doctors have to advise termination as the safer option.
So what is it about a “pregnancy” that is so different? Why would women even contemplate continuing one of these things to term, if the safer option is termination?
We may never have an approved answer to that question handed down from on high, yet we are forever indebted to the Royal College for giving us such a caring and important directive for the health of our women.
As a medical student, this news sickens me and makes me take pause as to what the future of medicine may hold. It is the undeniable truth that a woman's body is designed to bear a pregnancy and bring forth another human life. This is has been occurring throughout human existence. When one takes the time to truly consider the physiological response of the body to the growing child and the changes that occur throughout the entire pregnancy, it makes one stop in wonder and amazement at the naturalness of pregnancy and childbirth. And yet, the hand of satan has entered into our profession, slowly at first, but gaining speed in the last four decades, looking to crush the souls of future generations, attempting to destroy women and to take his revenge on the sex that brought forth man's savior.
This story may originate in the UK, but how long before ACOG begins to make similar recommendations and guidelines? We saw only a couple years back the attempt to make it an ethical obligation under ACOG's guidelines to refer for an abortion. If we, as those who recognize that sanctity of life in medicine, band together and stand up for the truth and unborn then there may be hope for the future, for if we cannot protect that most vulnerable of our patients, then how will we be able to care for any of our patients?
It is not easy to stand up against the establishment. I know from personal experience, and have written about it previously on this blog. And yet, it is something we must do. Consider today's gospel:
24"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. 25"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? 28And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; 29yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? 31Therefore do not be anxious, saying, `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall we wear?' 32For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well. 34"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day. (Emphasis mine)
Consider how applicable this is to physicians and students today. The Lord will provide! He has call us to seek his kingdom in all that we do, which means that we cannot compromise and violate our concience and the teachings given to us by Christ and his Apostles. If we trust in the Lord, He will provide all that we need and grant us the strength to proclaim His Truth. The road may be difficult and troublesome for awhile, but in the end, the reward is our heavenly home. Remember that in order for the hand of Satan and the culture of death to be destroyed, we must allow ourselves to become the instruments of the Lord, so that his Love may conquer and reign in all aspects of our profession. In this way, maybe one day the truth regarding abortion, pregnancy, and the sanctity of life will be proclaimed once again by groups like the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and by the American College of OB/GYNs.
