The Charlie Gard Case: The Patient, the Catholic Physician and the State
The tragic case of Charlie Gard and his parents’ fight for their rights as decision makers have given us all pause concerning the role of not only government, but also physicians in such decisions. Recently a High Court Judge in Great Britain has agreed to allow an American doctor, Dr. Michio Hirano of Columbia University who specializes in mitochondrial diseases and genetic myopathies, to assess 11-month-old Charlie, who suffers from mitochondrial depletion syndrome. Collaborating with Dr. Hirano was a physician from the Vaticans Bamino Gesú Children’s Hospital.
