In a Feb. 7, 2012 Wall St. Journal op-ed, Democrat Senators Boxer, Murray, and Shaheen claimed that President Obama’s HHS mandate was a victory for women’s health. Several CMA women physician members, including president Maricela P. Moffitt, M.D., M.P.H., and past president Kathleen Raviele, M.D., responded to this column, asserting that President Obama’s mandate is bad for women’s health and for the profession of medicine. The Catholic Medical Association joined six other medical organizations in a friend of the court brief filed on Feb. 13 in the U.S. Supreme Court by lead counsel Bioethics Defense Fund (BDF), challenging the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, (“Obamacare”).

Pittsburgh’s bishop, David A Zubik, issued a strong statement in reaction to the HHS mandate targeting Catholic institutions. According to Bishop Zubik, “The Obama administration has just told the Catholics of the United States, “To Hell with you!” There is no other way to put it.”
