Three: Physicians should promote healing, and avoid or minimize harm. For a physician to assist a patient in taking their own life it implies that some lives are not worth living. Physicians are called to heal, provide comfort, and promote life; not to end life. God to cathmed.org to find out more. The CMA supports your right to know.
Four: Depression may result in people wanting to end their life as a way out. In Oregon 25% of patients were given overdoses to end their lives yet none of these patients were diagnosed or treated for depression. Depression can be treated with medicine or therapy, and results in patients no longer desiring to end their life. Often a request to end their life from a patient, is really translated as a cry for help, support, or sympathy. As a physician, care and support should be provided to the patient to promote healing.
