Catholic Medical Missionaries Gather for Reflective Retreat

Over the first weekend of February, Catholic medical missionaries convened at the Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center in Palm Beach, Florida, for a transformative retreat. Thirteen missionaries, representing diverse regions across the United States and Guatemala, gathered for the retreat and currently serve in various capacities both long-term and short-term in Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Uganda, and the Bronx.
Under the guidance of retreat director Fr. Herald Brock, CFR, the theme “From the Heart of the Father to the Ends of the Earth” served as a focal point for participants. The retreat included enriching talks led by Fr. Herald, daily Mass, Holy Hour, Liturgy of the Hours, and an interactive discussion centered on Pope Leo’s papal document “Dilexi Te.” Attendees also enjoyed opportunities for fellowship and reflection, complemented by delightful cuisine and the warmth of Florida’s sunshine.
Fr. Herald’s reflections drew from his article in the November 2021 edition of the Linacre Quarterly, titled “From the Heart of the Father to the Ends of the Earth: The Participation of the Church and the Baptized in the Mission of Jesus.” His insights emphasized that mission is integral to the identity of Jesus and the fundamental nature of the Church, originating from the inner life of God. Engaging discussions also explored critical Vatican II documents, including Ad Gentes and Lumen Gentium, as well as significant papal encyclicals such as Evangelii Nuntiandi, Redemptoris Missio, and Evangelii Gaudium, helping to ground these themes in real-world missionary experiences.
Feedback from the retreat has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants noting its profound impact on their commitment to the mission. One missionary remarked, “It was so powerful and poignant to the call to missions, bringing peace to my heart as I delved deeper into that call.” Another stated, “The theme effectively bridged spirituality and theology with practical applications in the field.”
There is considerable interest in future retreats, either in similar or diverse locations. The gathering fostered substantial opportunities for networking and collaboration, attracting a community evidently drawn together by the Holy Spirit.
