CMA Joins Open Letter on HHS Preventive Services Mandate
October 11, 2011
Bala Cynwyd, PA -- The Catholic Medical Association (CMA) joined the USCCB and 18 other organizations in an October 11 Capitol Hill newspaper ad protesting the conscience-rights-denying HHS "preventive services" mandate. The statement can be viewed by clicking the icon on the right.
On August 1, 2011, the Secretary of HHS mandated that "preventive services" for women such as abortifacients, contraceptives, and sterilization, be offered and subsidized by all insurance plans and issuers, including practically all Catholic institutional employers and health insurance plans.
The October 11 ad, signed by the USCCB, the CMA, several major Catholic universities, the Knights of Columbus, and other leading agencies, pointed out that this policy undermines both religious freedom and access to health care
The organizations call upon all people of good will to reverse this policy. One effective way for people to help is to invite their U.S. House Representatives to co-sponsor and vote for H.R. 1179, the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act and their Senators to support the Senate version, S. 1467.
Founded in 1932, the Catholic Medical Association is the largest association of Catholic physicians in North America. For more information, go to http://www.cathmed.org.
